U.S., Azerbaijan national soccer teams to play in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, May 27, 2014 / AAC / - Tonight, the U.S. and Azerbaijan soccer teams will meet in a first-ever friendly game between the two national squads at San Francisco's Candlestick Park stadium. Both teams are coached by the legendary German footballers: Jurgen Klinsmann for Team-USA and Berti Vogts for Azerbaijan.

LOS ANGELES, May 8, 2014 /AAC/ - Twenty two years have passed since the Armenian armed forces occupied and destroyed the city of Shusha, once a predominantly Azerbaijani-populated historic center of the Mountainous Karabakh region. Shusha's cultural significance as the cradle of Azerbaijani culture for centuries earns it a title of Jerusalem of Azerbaijan.


Famous Azerbaijani musical staged in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Sep. 7, 2013 /AAC/ -- LA's famous Dorothy Chandler Pavilion hosted the first-ever U.S. staging of the renowned Azerbaijani musical comedy, Arşın Mal Alan (The Cloth Peddler). Organized by the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in LA with support from the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), the event was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of this operetta by the patriarch of Azerbaijani classical music, Uzeyir Hajibeyli.


LA Times: California lawmakers turn attention from state to Caucasus

SACRAMENTO, May 5, 2014 /Los Angeles Times/ - State lawmakers briefly turned their attention from California to the Caucasus region as an Assembly panel approved a measure touching on a long-standing geopolitical feud between Armenia and Azerbaijan. At issue is Nagorno-Karabakh, a semiautonomous territory within Azerbaijan's borders but populated mainly by ethnic Armenians.


Stanford students hold Azerbaijani concert

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jun. 19, 2013 /AAC/ -- Students enrolled in the "Azerbaijani Music and Culture" class at Stanford have organized a concert of Azerbaijani music for academic audience at the university. Guided by the kamancha master and native of Azerbaijan, Imamyar Hasanov, students performed Azerbaijani mughams of "Chahargah" and "Heyrati" as well as the Azerbaijani folk songs "Gubanin agh almasi", "Sari Gelin" and "Lachin" on tar, gaval, ud and other traditional instruments.
