U.S., Azerbaijan national soccer teams to play in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, May 27, 2014 / AAC / - Tonight, the U.S. and Azerbaijan soccer teams will meet in a first-ever friendly game between the two national squads at San Francisco's Candlestick Park stadium. Both teams are coached by the legendary German footballers: Jurgen Klinsmann for Team-USA and Berti Vogts for Azerbaijan.

Shusha - the Jerusalem of Azerbaijan

ASA celebrates 55th anniversary in Empire State Building

NEW YORK, Oct. 18, 2012 /AAC-ASA/ - Azerbaijan Society of America celebrated its 55th anniversary and the 21st anniversary of Azerbaijani Independence Day with a reception at the landmark Empire State Building in New York. The nearly 100 attendees at the reception included high-ranking diplomats from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, representatives from various New York-based governmental, non-governmental and business organizations, CBS News and other media groups, Azerbaijani, Turkish and Jewish communities, students from Columbia and New York Universities.

LA Times: California lawmakers turn attention from state to Caucasus

SACRAMENTO, May 5, 2014 /Los Angeles Times/ - State lawmakers briefly turned their attention from California to the Caucasus region as an Assembly panel approved a measure touching on a long-standing geopolitical feud between Armenia and Azerbaijan. At issue is Nagorno-Karabakh, a semiautonomous territory within Azerbaijan's borders but populated mainly by ethnic Armenians.

They are Azer Rustamov of the University of Missouri and Abulfaz Hajizade of the Oklahoma State University-Institute of Technology. Both students demonstrated not only a high level of ambition for academic success, but also desire to increase awareness of Azerbaijan in the U.S.

Famous Azerbaijani musical staged in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Sep. 7, 2013 /AAC/ -- LA's famous Dorothy Chandler Pavilion hosted the first-ever U.S. staging of the renowned Azerbaijani musical comedy, Arşın Mal Alan (The Cloth Peddler). Organized by the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in LA with support from the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), the event was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of this operetta by the patriarch of Azerbaijani classical music, Uzeyir Hajibeyli.

ASA 2015 Fall Scholarship Award

Azerbaijan Society of America announces its 2015 Fall Scholarship Award to help qualified students with their educational needs. The $1000 award is given to the deserving winner of the ASA essay contest based on the evaluation by the ASA Scholarship Program Committee.

Awarded for the 7th consecutive year, ASA scholarship recognizes the students who contribute to the promotion of Azerbaijan, its cultural and historical heritage, in the U.S.

Stanford students hold Azerbaijani concert

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jun. 19, 2013 /AAC/ -- Students enrolled in the "Azerbaijani Music and Culture" class at Stanford have organized a concert of Azerbaijani music for academic audience at the university. Guided by the kamancha master and native of Azerbaijan, Imamyar Hasanov, students performed Azerbaijani mughams of "Chahargah" and "Heyrati" as well as the Azerbaijani folk songs "Gubanin agh almasi", "Sari Gelin" and "Lachin" on tar, gaval, ud and other traditional instruments.

ASA West celebrates Nowruz in California

IRVINE, Calif., March 24, 2015 /ASA/ -- On March 21st, Azerbaijani Society of America (ASA) Western Region hosted the first major Azerbaijani celebration of Nowruz - Vernal Equinox - at the Orange County Hilton in Costa Mesa, CA. Among the nearly 250 guests at the event were also the House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair, California Congressman Ed Royce (R-CA), Mayors of Irvine and Fountain Valley.

Azeri-American scientist nominated for SelectScience awards

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 20, 2013 /AAC/ - SelectScience, a UK-based publisher of scientific product news and expert reviews, has recently selected two products designed by a fellow Azerbaijani-American scientist, Dr. Ismail Rustamov, among the top 8 finalists for the Best Separations Product of 2012. The award is part of The Scientists' Choice Awards, where laboratory products are nominated and voted for by scientists.
