AZERBAIJANI-AMERICAN COUNCIL EXTENDS GREETINGS ON THE OCCASION OF THE U.S. INDEPENDENCE DAY

Azerbaijani-American Council (AAC) joins all Azeri-Americans in celebration of the U.S. Independence Day, July 4th. 234 years ago on this day, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming the independence of American colonies from Great Britain.

Drafted by Thomas Jefferson as its principal author, the Declaration of Independence provided for unalienable rights of Americans to "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness". For over two centuries, these basic but fundamental rights attracted millions of people around the world to call America a new home. Consequently, these words of Jefferson also defined our nation, a land of free people of diverse cultures and faiths, all pursuing their own American dream.

The American ideals of freedom and equality for all are not alien to Azerbaijani people. In 1918, Azeris were blessed with the ability to build a first parliamentary democracy in the Middle East and the Muslim world. A year later, after meeting with Azerbaijani delegation at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, President Woodrow Wilson drew a concise parallel between Azerbaijani and American ideals by saying: "There came in a very distinguished group of gentlemen from Azerbaijan. I was talking to men who talked the same language that I did in respect of ideals , in respect of conceptions of liberty, in conceptions of right and justice". As a vibrant community present in the United States for over 50 years, Azeri-Americans are proud of this historic recognition.

Today, we join in celebration of our way of life and wish all Americans prosperity, peace and success in their pursuit of happiness.

God Bless America!

THE REPEATED ALLOCATION OF DIRECT US AID TO AN ILLEGAL FOREIGN ENTITY IS DAMAGING TO THE US REPUTATION, FOREIGN INTERESTS, EFFORTS IN AFGHANISTAN

LOS ANGELES, NEW YORK - Azerbaijani-American Council (AAC) and Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA) express their outrage over the vote in the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations markup session on June 30th 2010 to allocate $10 million in direct aid to “Nagorno-Karabakh” as a part of the fiscal year (FY) 2011 budget. This marks a $2-million increase from the FY2010 allocation to an illegal foreign entity and double the amount of FY2009 budget allocations for the same purpose. The said subcommittee also approved $44 million in aid to Armenia exceeding FY2011 budget amounts proposed by President Obama.

AZERBAIJANI-AMERICANS CELEBRATE THE 92ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST SECULAR DEMOCRACY IN THE MUSLIM WORLD

NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES - Azerbaijani-American Council (AAC) and Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA) join all Azerbaijani people in celebration of the 92nd anniversary of the establishment of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR), the first secular  parliamentary democracy in the Muslim world. Over the 23 months of its existence prior to Bolshevik occupation of Azerbaijan in April 1920, ADR succeeded in restoring the territorial integrity of the country, in securing the international recognition of Azerbaijan, and in establishing democratic institutions, including the Parliament and the multi-party representative government. Among other key achievements of the first republic were the 1919 universal suffrage law, granting women the right to vote (notably, ahead of the United States and some European nations); the establishment of Baku State University; and the adoption of the modern national symbols of Azerbaijan, including its tri-color flag, anthem and the coat of arms.

EIGHTEEN YEARS SINCE THE ARMENIAN OCCUPATION OF SHUSHA, PEACE IN SOUTH CAUCASUS IS OUT OF REACH

LOS ANGELES, NEW YORK - On this day, 18 years ago, Armenian armed forces occupied the city of Shusha, a predominantly Azerbaijani-populated town in the Mountainous Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

Established in the 18th century by Panah-Ali Khan Javanshir Ziyadoglu as a capital of the independent Karabakh khanate, Shusha became a cradle of Azerbaijani Turkic culture, literature and, especially, music. In 1870s, master Sadigjan developed the first Azeri tar (lute) in Shusha. City's rich musical tradition also greatly influenced Uzeyir Hajibeyov, the patriarch of Azerbaijani classical music and opera, first of its kind in the Muslim world. Many other prominent  figures, including Bül-Bül (founder of Azerbaijani opera vocal); Jabbar Garyaghdy oglu (Azerbaijani Mugham Art virtuoso); singer Rashid Behbudov; composers Ashraf Abbasov, Suleyman Alasgarov, Fikret Amirov, Farhad Badalbeyli, Seyid and Khan Shushinski; writers Abdurrehim bey Hagverdiyev, Mirmohsum Navvab, Najaf bey Vezirov; 19-th century poetess Khurshudbanu Natavan; and one of the prominent public figures of Turkish Republic, Ahmet Agaoglu, also originated from Shusha.
